task 2-merit & distinction essay
You are to take the role of a scientific journalist who has been given the task of writing a report for a national newspaper following accidents and allegations the health and safety are not being taken seriously in Britain’s scientific workplaces. Submit an essay report that explains HOW & WHY safe working practices in a laboratory are regulated.
Include:
Using your A3 research sheets from the lesson
•CLEAPSS hazcards
•Manufacturer’s data sheets
•MSDS (material safety data sheet)
•Good laboratory practice eg quality standards, UKAS BS 17025, BS EN ISO 9001
•Risk Assessments
•COSHH regulations (register)
•HSE inspectors
•UKAS assessments
•Other relevant regulation/legislation that we have covered
To achieve these criteria, attention should be paid to applying the most up to- date regulations in all working practices in today’s scientific environments
What you need to bring in Monday!
Remember to bring in the stuff below on the 10th!
- safety signs poster
-posters about legislation
-posters about when legislation is not followed (e.g. SARS, MRSA and foot & mouth)
-essary report that explains how & why safe working practices in a lab are regulated (e.g. COSHH, CLEAPPS)
If you have not given in your risk assessments and 'what not to do lab' image- then bring these in aswell
These are all the things you need for the health & safety assignment
If you have any outstanding assignments (LIMS or lab design) these must be brought in aswell.
After the deadline date we will have 2 weeks to make improvements to all the assignments for unit 2, so bring all the things you have been working on in your own time to improve your work and anything you want to add to your work.
