Science environment: any location where science is carried out as part of the day-to-day routine
Procedure: method of conducting the business
Calibration: checking that equipment is working to a set standard
Hierarchy: a number of people arranged in order of rank
Centrifuge: piece of equipment used to separate solids & liquids, particles of different sizes or liquids of different densities.
Microscope: optical instrument used for magnifying very small things so that they are visible to the naked eye.
Balance: measures the mass of objects, powders or liquids
pH meter: measures the pH of a liquid
Oven: heats substances, often to high temperatures.
Incubator: maintains objects or substances at a particular temperature, often human body temperature.
Fume cupboard: protects the operator & others from hazardous fumes & powders.
Graduated pipette: measures liquids for use.

Oscilloscope: used to measure voltage & frequency in electric circuits.

Assignment 1 outline:
Scenario
Science technicians play a very important role in the science industry carrying out a whole range of procedures. Working as a science technician you need to be aware of the qualifications you need, how information is communicated in your place of work, how to carry out several standard procedures and how chemicals stored are disposed of safely.
Task 1a
As a technician you have to carry out a range of common procedures.  Submit evidence of documented procedures that you have used in the laboratory (P1). This must include;
Method for wiring a plug (photograph)
Method for servicing a Bunsen burner (photograph)
Method for flaming glass (photograph)
Material disposal sheet
A simple Titration

1b) For each of these you must explain the importance of the procedure in the science industry. (M1)

2a) Conduct a series of interviews with a Science Technician from each department, investigating procedures & practices commonly undertaken by them in a laboratory. For each procedure/practice give a brief description & identify how they are communicated within the team (P2)

EXPLAIN and ANALYSE why laboratory procedures and practices must be communicated in a laboratory.
You will need to make a judgment about the importance of communicating laboratory procedures to other laboratory personnel, giving reasons and examples to support your evaluation.(M2/D1)
